A Love Letter to My Crochet Club: How a Facebook Post Turned Into a Year of Friendship, Yarn, and Community

Updated: 8 hours ago

A year into crocheting, I had no plans beyond making things and sharing them online with friends and family. But life sometimes throws the most beautiful, unplanned things right in front of you, like an “oh, here ya go.”

I had been crocheting for about a year when, being the sap (Pisces) that I am, I made a post about my crochetiversary. I shared a little throwback from my very first project to the one I had just finished that day. I was simply sharing for my own pleasure and nothing more.

Then my best friend from middle school through college, Sam, commented asking if I could hold a party to teach others how to crochet.

I told her my sister had been wanting to learn too, and I was more than down for the idea, especially as a stay-at-home mom with limited social interaction. My cousin chimed in saying she was also interested. Little did I know that this small “party” would turn into the highlight of my entire 2025.

We met for the first time in November of 2024 in my mom’s dining room. I think we had Papa John’s pizza and some desserts. I had folders prepared with instructions and stitch video tutorials complete with QR codes, the whole shebang.

I was honestly super nervous.

I’m a really outgoing person, but I still have social anxiety?? Make it make sense. I don’t know. I was anxious about hosting people who were entirely new to me, along with others I hadn’t talked to in years.

I don’t remember many specific details from that first meetup, but I do remember laughing. A lot. We yapped the entire time. It felt like an experience in girlhood I hadn’t felt since college.

Somewhere along the way, I had gotten lost in motherhood and in my job as a teacher. I barely felt like myself anymore. I know that sounds cliché, but I think it’s only cliché because it’s true for so many, if not all, moms.

Over the next three months, we met monthly and even gained new members. We started having themed lunches with our meetups; breakfast, Mexican food, soups, you name it. Over time, everyone began bringing their kids, and we just let them be feral together (honestly, as they should).

During the summer months, it was especially nice to open the back door and let the kids run around outside while we yapped each other’s ears off.

By January, everyone completed their first independent project: a loaf cat. Seeing people use skills I taught them to hand-make something was surreal. That moment inspired the lesson side of my business and gave me confidence that I could teach, despite literally having a degree in education (thanks, imposter syndrome).

As of this month, we’ve been meeting for a little over a year. It’s been a whirlwind. We’ve laughed and cried. Ranted and raved. It’s been the highlight of my 2025 and honestly one of the highlights of my adult life so far.

I’m endlessly grateful to the girlie pops in my little group:

To Ariel: Thank you for showing me a fierce example of motherhood without apologies or regrets.

To Hannah: Sometimes I swear we are the same person. I love having you as my best mom friend, meeting you this year has been pure joy.

To Sam: Thank you for showing me that friendship isn’t linear and can survive even the longest and darkest trenches. Reconnecting with you has been everything twenty-one-year-old me ever hoped for.

To Lexxie: Thank you for teaching me new perspectives, recapping Taylor Swift albums with me, and being such a genuine friend. Getting to know you this year makes me hope for many more.

To Brynn: Thank you for being my sister, for doing my nails, for trusting me when you need advice, and for letting me be your big sister. I don’t take that role lightly, and I love you deeply.

To Katie: Basically another sister, thank you for always powering through family functions with me.

To Erika: You literally just started coming, lol, but you know I love you long time.

If you’ve been craving community, sometimes it starts with simply sharing what you love.
